It’s a week of life-changing moments for 18-year-old Victoria Reed.
Not only is she graduating from high school in Grapevine, Texas, but her four-year-old black and white Boston Terrier, Bruschi, has just been given the Guinness World Record for “dog with the largest eyes” — a whopping 1.1 inches in diameter.
So which does she think will have more signficance?
“Honestly, Bruschi’s record,” she told The Huffington Post, laughing. “I’m not sure I’m going to graduation. Maybe if I could bring him, but I don’t think they allow animals.”
Bruschi, who was named after former New England Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi, came into Reed’s life three years ago when she found him while working at Operation Kindness, a no-kill shelter near Arlington, Texas.
“I had another Boston Terrier, but I saw him and he jumped up in my arms and wouldn’t leave,” she said.
Reed noticed Bruschi’s huge peepers from the start, but wasn’t sure they were record-breakers.
“The eyes are big on a Boston Terrier anyway, but when I’d bring him out in public, people would say, ‘Wow, he has huge eyes,’” Reed said. “My vet joked a few months ago about submitting his photo to Guinness and I just went for it.”
Reed found out about the world record on Wednesday at 2 a.m. after she got off work at a shoe store and she immediately told Bruschi, who she claims was happy about the eye-popping honor.
“He started barking,” she said. “He shook his body. He can’t shake his tail because it was broken and then set wrong.”
Reed understands that there may be other dogs with larger eyes who someday take the record from Bruschi, but, doggone it, she is hoping to use his newfound celebrity for good.
“I’d like to raise awareness about Operation Kindness,” she said. “I would also like to meet the world’s largest dog and other dog record holders.”
Bruschi holds the Guinness World Record for dog with the largest eyes — each one measuring a whopping 28mm in diameter. Here are the top 10 facts about this record-breaking dog. (With more pictures below!)
1 - Bruschi is a 4 year old black and white Boston Terrier, who lives with his owner, Victoria Reed, and her other Boston Terrier, Toby, in Texas USA. He holds the Guinness World Record for “dog with the largest eyes” – measured by a vet to be 28mm in diameter!
2 - Victoria didn’t really notice Bruschi’s superlatively large eyes at first – but after friends, family, and even his vet commented on how large they are, she made an application for a Guinness World Records title on his behalf – which quickly led to the title he now holds.
3 - Bruschi gets on wonderfully with his buddy Toby – “They love each other: they play together, sleep together… do everything together.”
4 - Unlike Toby though, Bruschi is a very energetic and attention-seeking dog – “He’s up and down, jumpy, hyper, always by my side twitching and wiggling. He always snorts… it’s so loud you can hear him in another room, or when you’re on the phone with someone – I usually can’t hear the tv either!”
5 - Other dogs certainly notice Bruschi’s extraordinary eyes, and even seem intimidated by him on occasion. “He will growl a random dogs, maybe he’s ‘saying don’t laugh at me.’”
6 - Bruschi loves to play, and his favourite toys are balls, especially tennis balls – “He could play fetch for hours, it gets to the point where I have to put the ball up out of reach because he wont stop playing and is out of breath!”
7 - Bruschi loves dressing up, and particularly enjoys wearing t-shirts, and bandanas. He has an overflowing bucket full of different outfits in his home.
8 - Bruschi had a very worrying medical scare one night in 2011, when one of his eyes popped out of it’s socket! Fortunately a local vet was able to patch him up, and he is now perfectly healthy – though he cannot see directly in front of himself, he has only peripheral vision.
9 - Bruschi was adopted from a rescue centre in August 2009. Abuse by his They love each other, they play together, sleep together every thing togetherprevious owner has led him to suffer from inflamed intestines, meaning he can now only eat bland food and treats. But he is safe and happy in his new home with Victoria.
10 - While picked on by some for his unusual appearance, owner Victoria feels he’d be delighted if he fully understand the Guinness World Records title he holds: “I honestly feel like he would be really happy about it… some people do make fun of him for his looks, but I feel like he would go up to them and say: ‘Haha, look where I am now, I’ve got a record for my looks!’”
